Taiga Group to Modernise Board Machine at SLPK, Expanding Packaging Board Capabilities
16 June 2026
Taiga Group LLC is pleased to announce a large-scale project to upgrade the board machine (BM-21) at Syktyvkarskiy LPK (SLPK). The launch of the modernised production line is scheduled for late 2028 to early 2029.
This initiative equips the company to master the production of coated three-layer board. Such a strategic move will help SLPK broaden its product portfolio, addressing the specific needs of the consumer packaging and printing industries. By replacing heavyweight two-layer boards with three-layer alternatives, the company can offer the market a lighter material that maintains excellent stiffness. This new quality standard gives buyers a significant economic advantage and boosts the competitiveness of their finished goods.
SLPK will continue developing its existing consumer board brands (KomiPak, KomiBase Lux, and KomiBase Aseptic) while entering the folding boxboard (FBB) segment – a fresh market for the enterprise. The new product in this category will be KomiPrint Lux, a high-quality equivalent to GC2 grades, which is highly sought after in the folding box manufacturing and premium printing sectors.
The rebuild encompasses two primary technological focus areas. The first is the transition to three-layer board production. A substantial part of the investment will be allocated to upgrading the BM-21, which involves replacing the headboxes for the top and bottom layers, installing a former and a third wire section to shape the middle layer, and refurbishing the press section and size press. These modifications make it possible to customise the fiber composition for each layer, leading to major improvements in the material's physical and mechanical properties. Consequently, the board offers high bulk and increased stiffness, alongside enhanced dimensional stability. This aspect is vital for converters, as the smooth operation of high-speed packaging lines and the premium visual appeal of the finished packaging depend directly on these parameters.
The project's second focus area is the manufacturing of coated board. The board machine will be equipped with a new coater serving a full web width of 6.3 meters. This unit facilitates the application of one or two coating layers directly on-machine. Applying this finish improves surface smoothness, adds gloss and brightness, and ensures flawless printability alongside accurate colour reproduction. To execute this stage, a dedicated coating mixture preparation workshop (a "coating kitchen") will be established at SLPK. Furthermore, finishing operations will be reinforced by a new slitter rewinder and a modern conveyor belt handling and packaging line.
"We are witnessing a sustained increase in global demand for high-quality packaging materials. Our objective is to supply our international partners with a more extensive selection of boards for diverse applications, while upholding strict quality standards. For our clients, this means a wider choice of premium products, full compliance with the highest global requirements, and excellent converting performance," notes Tigran Saakyan, SEO of Taiga Group LLC. "In particular, we aim to expand our offering for producers of aseptic packaging for beverages and dairy products across all formats, from 0.2 to 2 litres. Launching the modernised line empowers converters worldwide to boost their operational efficiency and deliver exceptional value to brand owners. Ultimately, end-users will also benefit, receiving their favourite products in even higher-quality, stronger, and more reliable packaging."
